3rd Annual Healing Hearts Homeless Memorial

Odyssey House was honored to attend the third Annual Healing Hearts Homeless Memorial that took place at Muskoseepi Park on May 31st, 2018. The purpose of this event was to bring awareness to people experiencing homelessness within the Grande Prairie.

“People experiencing homelessness love passionately and grieve as deeply as those who have a stable home. Their deaths can go unnoticed as there may not be recognition that the cause of death was related to the state of being homeless,” – Katherine Schmidt

It is meaningful to create awareness that people can pass away due to the effects of being homeless and it is crucial that this community also be provided the opportunity to honor their loved ones and grieve their loss. The memorial included an Elder’s prayer, smudging ceremony, traditional drumming and dance, lived experience speakers & a community BBQ provided by Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie. As well as a beautiful plaque to honor the memory of of all those who have lost their lives while experiencing homelessness. The 3rd Annual memorial was provided by Community Social Development, in partnership with Odyssey House, YMCA of Northern Alberta, ACFA Regionale de Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Rotary House, HeARTh Social Profit and the Northern Addictions Centre.
