Empowering Launch Event

Last week Odyssey House was proud to be one of three cities in Alberta to launch a ‘Lift Her Up’ event. Thanks to those who came, if you were not able to attend, you can still get involved. We are asking all candidates to go online and sign the commitment. We encourage all of you to connect with those you know who are running and ask them to sign the online commitment at https://www.acws.ca/liftherup

As candidates sign, their names will be published on the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) website.

The #liftherup campaign was created by Alberta Women’s Shelter Directors as a direct response to the years of injustices related to women, especially those perusing a career in politics. Our Executive Director was part of this conversation in December 2016 and has been a champion for this cause ever since. As we move forward in our goal of ending violence against women, we need to create spaces where all people are accepted and have opportunities

Join us on this journey. This campaign is in support of women in politics and public life. Women have the right to feel empowered and safe participating in public life as politicians, public figures and through their contributions to public discourse.

Provincially, this is a call out to end sexist and violent language and behaviours towards women in public life — during the current municipal elections.

ACWS is asking candidates to:

  • Influence the nature, tone and content of public discourse during this election period.
  • Bring attention and change to the unacceptable treatment of female candidates and officials.
  • Place accountability mechanisms in place to hold municipal politicians and trustees to account for their behaviour after the election
