Success Story: Safe Enough to do so

February 5, 2019 Healing Heroes

“Equality” and her two young children came to Serenity Place in the early stages of operation, after fleeing her ex-partner and his violent behaviours. Staff worked with her to move her in slowly to not allow her ex-partner to notice items missing from the matrimonial home. Equality attended groups, worked with the family support worker to reach all of her identified goals. She was able to learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Understand red flags and educate herself on how to keep her self and her children safe. ‘Equality’ continued working full time and worked with staff to obtain child support and subsidized child care. Staff were able to work with ‘Equality’ to ensure her children were able to continue their sports and have the cost funded. ‘Equality’ also worked with the Community Support team and court support team to go through trial for her separation and later, the finalization of a messy divorce. After 1 year in house, Equality started a new, healthy relationship and felt safe enough to do so. Eventually Equality and her new partner moved into a new home together with her children. ‘Equality’ continues to attend abuse information and self-esteem groups that her new partner supports & respects!

Thank you to the real life women behind “Equality”who share their stories.
